How to Get a Tennessee Driver License as a New Sumner County Resident

New Tennessee residents with a current out-of-state driver license must obtain a Tennessee license within 30 days after establishing residency. For most adults with a current out-of-state license, the visit includes document review, a vision screening, issuance of the Tennessee credential and surrender of the prior state license. If your out-of-state license has been expired for more than six months, Tennessee requires the vision screening, knowledge test and road skills test. Step 1: Start the application online

Tennessee allows new residents to complete the regular driver-license application online and upload documents for pre-approval. The state says document pre-approval can take up to five business days, so begin before scheduling your in-person visit.

After applying, use the state appointment system to check whether an appointment is available for the service you need. Appointment availability and the types of transactions offered vary by location. Tennessee advises applicants to arrive 15 minutes early; a late arrival may be treated as a walk-in instead.

Step 2: Gather the required documents

Bring original documents or certified copies even if the state pre-approved your uploads. Photocopies are not accepted, and documents may be verified with the issuing agency. Verification can delay issuance.

Prepare:

• One document proving U.S. citizenship or lawful presence. Examples listed by Tennessee include an official birth certificate, valid unexpired U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship or qualifying immigration document.

Because hours, appointment availability and temporary closures can change, check the state’s Driver Services locations page before leaving home. Tennessee also publishes closure advisories and directs new residents to its online application and appointment systems.

Step 4: Complete testing and surrender your old license

All new or returning residents must take a vision screening at a full-service Driver Services Center. Additional testing depends on the status and origin of your current credential:

• A current out-of-state license generally requires the vision screening.
• An out-of-state license expired more than six months requires the vision screening, Tennessee knowledge test and road skills test.

Do not confuse the license step with vehicle registration

A Tennessee driver license and Tennessee vehicle registration are separate move-in tasks.

If you brought a vehicle from another state, Tennessee says the application for title and registration must go through the county clerk in the county where you live. The state’s new-resident registration guidance says to bring your most current out-of-state registration and, when applicable, the name and address of the company receiving vehicle payments. If that information is unavailable, the out-of-state title is required.

Tennessee’s new-resident plate procedure also identifies proof of identification and residency, the current out-of-state registration, and either the current out-of-state title or lienholder information as documentation for the title-and-registration application.

• Waiting beyond the 30-day deadline. Start gathering documents as soon as you establish Tennessee residency.
• Bringing copies instead of originals or certified copies. The state says photocopies are not accepted.
• Using only a lease as proof of residency. Tennessee says a lease may count as one proof only when accompanied by a qualifying landlord letter, and a second approved residency document is still required.
• Going to the county clerk for the initial license transfer. The initial transfer requires a full-service Driver Services Center.
