Public Transit in Gallatin: A Rider’s Guide to Routes, Fares and Reservations
Gallatin residents have two main public-transit options: WeGo Route 87, a scheduled regional bus connecting Gallatin with Hendersonville and Nashville, and MCHRA Public Transit, a reservation-based service serving Sumner County. Use WeGo for a scheduled commuter trip and MCHRA when you need a prearranged local or out-of-county ride. Check the official schedule before traveling because routes, alerts and departure times can change.
Gallatin public transit is not one single city bus system. Most riders will use one of two services:
- WeGo Route 87 for scheduled regional trips between Gallatin, Hendersonville and Nashville.
- MCHRA Public Transit for reservation-based transportation within Sumner County and other participating Middle Tennessee counties.
The simplest choice is to use WeGo when your trip fits a published route and departure time. Use MCHRA when you need a scheduled pickup arranged in advance, particularly for local trips, out-of-county transportation or trips that are not served by a fixed-route bus.

WeGo Route 87: scheduled service from Gallatin
WeGo’s Route 87 is named Gallatin–Hendersonville and provides regional bus service toward Nashville. The official route page lists the Gallatin Park and Ride as a departure point, followed by stops in Hendersonville and Nashville, including WeGo Central and locations along 21st Avenue South.
The current schedule page shows early-morning departures from the Gallatin Park and Ride, including listed departures at 5:37 a.m., 6:07 a.m., 6:34 a.m. and 7:04 a.m. for Nashville-bound service. These are examples from the displayed schedule, not a substitute for checking the departure selected for your travel date.
How to plan a WeGo Route 87 trip
- Open the official Route 87 schedule. Select the date and direction of travel.
- Confirm the departure stop. The route page lists the Gallatin Park and Ride and other stops along the corridor.
- Review alerts and detours. The page currently includes route-alert functionality and may show temporary stop changes or construction detours.
- Choose a payment method. WeGo accepts QuickTicket, contactless debit or credit cards, mobile wallets or exact cash on fixed-route service. American Express is not currently accepted.
- Arrive early. Give yourself time to find the boarding area and account for parking or walking time.
WeGo’s route page also provides bus-arrival information and a link for purchasing a ticket. Because the page is updated with alerts and schedule information, it should be your final check before leaving home.
WeGo fares and payment
WeGo lists the adult regional bus fare as $4.25 for one ride and a 20-ride regional pass for $73.50. The listed discounted regional fare is $2 per ride for eligible riders.
WeGo says youth ages 19 and younger, seniors ages 65 and older, people with disabilities and Medicare cardholders may qualify for discounted fares. Discounts are not applied until the rider obtains a WeGo Discount ID. Children age 4 and younger ride free.
If your trip continues onto local WeGo service in Nashville, check the fare rules for the complete journey. WeGo’s fare page lists separate local-service pricing and regional-service pricing.
MCHRA Public Transit: reserve a ride in advance
Mid-Cumberland Human Resource Agency, or MCHRA, operates public transit in Sumner County as part of a multi-county service area. Its service is reservation-based rather than a regularly scheduled city bus route. MCHRA says public transit is available regardless of age or income, subject to its rider requirements and scheduling capacity.
MCHRA requests that riders make reservations at least 24 hours in advance for local trips and 72 hours in advance for out-of-county trips. The agency says advance notice helps it accommodate more requests; if it cannot fit a trip into the schedule, it will try to offer another date or time.
How to book an MCHRA ride in Sumner County
- Gather your trip details. Have the pickup address, destination, date, requested pickup time and any accessibility information ready.
- Call MCHRA. The Sumner County number is 615-452-5868. The general MCHRA Operations Center number is 1-800-945-4125.
- Book early. Request local rides at least 24 hours ahead and out-of-county rides at least 72 hours ahead.
- Confirm the fare and pickup instructions. MCHRA’s fare depends on the trip and the number of county lines crossed.
- Be ready before the scheduled pickup. MCHRA advises riders to be ready at least 30 minutes before the pickup time and says drivers may wait only five minutes.
- Call to cancel. Riders should notify the dispatcher of cancellations at least two hours before pickup.
MCHRA’s public information does not provide one universal daily service-hours table for every Sumner County trip. Ask the dispatcher about the available pickup window when making the reservation.
MCHRA fares for Sumner County riders
MCHRA lists $10 each way for Sumner County trips to Nashville. Its published fare information also lists local and countywide fares, additional charges for scheduled stops and county lines crossed, and pass booklets. Fares must be paid in cash or bus passes; MCHRA says it does not accept personal checks.
Because the final price depends on the trip, ask for the exact fare during the reservation call. Do not assume that a local Gallatin trip, a Nashville trip and another out-of-county trip will cost the same.
Which service should you use?
Choose WeGo when:
- Your trip begins near the Route 87 corridor.
- You can travel at a published departure time.
- You are commuting toward Hendersonville or Nashville.
- You prefer boarding a scheduled bus without making a reservation.
Choose MCHRA when:
- You need a scheduled pickup rather than a fixed-route stop.
- Your destination is not convenient to Route 87.
- You need a local Sumner County trip arranged in advance.
- You need an out-of-county trip and can reserve it at least 72 hours ahead.
- You need to discuss accessibility or trip-specific assistance with a dispatcher.
MCHRA states that personal-care attendants or escorts may be required in some circumstances, including for riders under 16 or riders who need assistance. MCHRA does not supply personal-care attendants, and a required personal-care attendant or escort is not charged a fare.
Accessibility and rider rules
MCHRA says copies of its documents are available in alternative formats. Riders who are deaf or hard of hearing may use Tennessee Relay Services at 1-800-848-0298 and provide the local county phone number to be connected.
MCHRA’s published rules require riders to wear seat belts, have correct change ready, avoid tobacco, eating and drinking on the vehicle except for specified medical needs, and limit belongings to four bags per trip. Only service animals are allowed, according to the agency’s rider rules.
For a disability-related reasonable-modification request or ADA concern, MCHRA lists Anna Perry at 615-517-8940 and [email protected].
